Kemal’s novels now available in Chinese

Three novels of well-known Turkish author Orhan Kemal have been translated into Chinese under the auspices of TEDA, a Culture and Tourism Ministry project to publish Turkish cultural, artistic and literature works in other languages.

Three of Kemal’s novels, “Avare Yıllar” (Idle Years), “Cemile” and “Baba Evi” (My Father’s House) were translated into Chinese as part of the project. Some 33 of his books have been translated into 13 languages so far.

Twentieth century Turkish realist author Orhan Kemal's novel "El Kizi" (The Foreigner's Daughter) has been published In Russia this month as part of a literary translation subvention project by the Turkish Culture and Tourism Ministry. "El Kizi." translated into Russian by Yu Plotnikov. was published by the Hyperion Publishing House with funding from the Culture and Tourism Ministry's TEDA project. The novel, which Kemal wrote in 1960 and which was made into a television series in the 1980s, centers on the tragic life story of a naive and shy young woman.

Twentieth century Turkish realist author Orhan Kemal’s 1952 novel “Cemile” has been published in Spain, the İstanbul-based Orhan Kemal Culture Center announced on Friday.
Translated by Karen Eskenazi, the book was published in Spanish under the title “Lejos de Estambul” by Takusan Ediciones, and funded by the Turkish Culture and Tourism Ministry as part of a literary translation subvention project, the Anatolia news agency reported.

‘Murtaza’, published in 1952 by Orhan Kemal, the master realist author of Turkish Literature, is re-published with a new edition in Germany by Verlag Auf dem Ruffel within TEDA Project of Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The book was translated into German by Carl Koss. Murtaza which is one of the masterpieces of Orhan Kemal, tells the adventures of an immigrant warden who is known by putting his sense of duty before anything else.

Orhan Kemal books translated into Urdu

Two of late Turkish author Orhan Kemal’s books, “72. Koğuş” (72th Cell) and “Cemile” have been released in Pakistan as part of the Turkish Culture and Tourism Ministry’s TEDA project, which aims to publish Turkish works in other languages. 

“Both countries help each other in hard times. This is seen in the field of literature and culture,” Kemal’s son Işık Öğütçu recently told Anatolia news agency, noting that Pakistan and Turkey were sister countries. “Previously, two of my father’s books were released in Pakistan. Also, Jumhoori Publishing House released his two autobiographical books in 2010. Due to the interest in these books, ‘Cemile’ and ‘72. Koğuş’ were published by the same publishing house.” 

Kemal’s books have been translated into 13 languages since 2005.

His 35 books translated 
With the last two books, 35 of his books had now been released abroad, Öğütçü said. “I make offers to translators and publishing houses. Generally, foreign publishing houses do not know much about Turkish literature. They only know a few names. But we have a very rich literature and literary writers. The TEDA project has been very effective in these works reaching wider audiences. Another book of his will also be published in China this year.”

2014 will mark the 100th anniversary of Kemal’s birth.

Orhan Kemal’s short stories published in Urdu

A book that includes 19 short stories by the 20th century Turkish realist author Orhan Kemal has been published in Pakistan.
The Orhan Kemal Cultural Center said that the 19 stories selected from Kemal’s short story books “Sarhoşlar” (The Drunk, 1951) and “Çamaşırcının Kızı” (The Daughter of the Laundress, 1952) were translated into Urdu by Masud Akhtar Shaikh and published by Mesud Publishers under the title “Do Sharabi.”

   

 
Orhan Kemal’s ‘Cemile’ published in Egypt

Famous 20th century Turkish author Orhan Kemal’s 1952 novel “Cemile” has been published in Egypt, the İstanbul-based Orhan Kemal Culture Center announced on Friday.

Published in Arabic under the title “Gamila” by Afaq Books and translated by Abdülkadir Abdelli, the book will be launched this week at the Cairo Book Fair, scheduled for Jan. 22 to Feb. 2, the Anatolia news agency reported.

The book’s publishing in Egypt received funding from the Turkish Culture and Tourism Ministry as part of the ministry’s long-running literary translation subvention project called TEDA.

The novel, through the story of the poverty-stricken lives of Cemile, who works in a textile factory, and a factory clerk who wants to marry her, depicts in Kemal’s trademark realistic style the lives of factory workers and the hardships laborers encounter.

Orhan Kemal was the pen name of Mehmet Raşit Öğütçü, the novelist-playwright who lived from 1914 to 1970. “Cemile” is the third book in the author’s semi-autobiographical tetralogy, following his “Baba Evi” (My Father’s House, 1949) and “Avare Yılar” (Idle Years, 1950). The fourth book in the series is “Dünya Evi” (Marriage, 1960).

With the inclusion of the Arabic translation of “Cemile,” the number of Kemal’s novels translated into foreign languages has reached 10, Anatolia said. Recently, his memoir, “Nazım Hikmet’le 3.5 Yıl,” in which he chronicles his prison years with poet Hikmet through letters and diaries, has been published in English under the title “Orhan Kemal in Jail with Nazım Hikmet.”
